Over the duration of this online short course, you’ll work through the following modules:

Module 1
The role of governance in a rapidly changing context

Delve into the impact of existing governance approaches on the environment and society and the role of governance in driving towards a sustainable future.

Module 2
Unsustainable governance under pressure

Explore the risks and opportunities caused by different approaches to governance.

Module 3
Challenges of current ESG strategies, risk management and reporting frameworks

Examine the negative outcomes of a narrow use of strategies and frameworks.

Module 4
Transitioning to an interconnected view of governance for business and society

Explore pathways towards a purpose-driven system of governance for a sustainable future.

Module 5
Integrating good governance and sustainability into the core of business

Understand integrated systems and communication strategies to integrate sustainability.

Module 6
Governance leadership and collaboration

Understand effective governance leadership and the key skills required to succeed in a leadership role.

Module 7
Developing an action plan to enact the purpose of your organisation

Translate your learnings into a Leadership Action Plan for implementing good governance in your organisation.

Module 8
Collaborating for a sustainable future

Review your peers’ Leadership Action Plans and reflect on how you can strengthen your Leadership Action Plan using their feedback.

Dr Mario Abela

Dr Mario Abela is a strategic advisor to the Value Balancing Alliance and expert advisor on corporate reporting at Bain & Company. He is the global chair of World Intangible Capital Initiative and vice-chair of the IMA’s Sustainable Business Management Committee. Mario is a recognised expert in accounting, reporting and governance. He holds a PhD in Accounting from the University of London, a Masters of Science from Linkoping University, Sweden and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He has held senior executive positions in both the public and private sectors and, for the last decade, has been working in the area of sustainability and the importance of accounting and governance in companies transitioning to a sustainable economy. Mario is passionate about promoting the role accounting and governance can play in driving sustainable businesses and is a frequent presenter at international conferences and seminars.
